Week 9 EOC: The Apartment
In the movie, their was many cases of Quid Pro Quo Harassment. Their was a lot of gestures being said and acted upon the women workers that work there. “Most HR managers and the organizations for which they
work for would agree that they have a moral obligation to ensure that their
workplaces are free from unnecessary hazards and that conditions in the
workplace are safe for employees' physical and mental health. Regardless of
whether they agree about moral responsibility, they all must recognize their
legal responsibilities to ensure healthful working conditions.”( Hayes, D. and
Ninemeier, J. (2008). Human Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry
Wiley-Pg332). The elevator girl got slapped in the butt in front of other co-workers by one of the head bosses. There was a lot of people using personal time during company hours. Mr. Sheldrick used the Quid Pro Quo Harassment just like the others, just to get sometime with Fran. “Bullying.
Harassment that can occur on the playground, in the workforce, or any other
place. Usually, physical and psychological harassing behavior is perpetrated
against an individual, by one or more persons.”( Hayes, D. and Ninemeier, J.
(2008). Human Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry" Wiley-Pg339). There is a lot of bullying within the workplace, people will do close to anything to get what they want out of another person. Such as, Mr. Sheldrick using threats on his employees to get what he wants. Even though he is the boss, and he should set the example of how to work with one another. “In U.S. legal
terms, sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct on the job
that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment. Such
environments are unsafe for employees both physically and mentally. In
real-life terms, harassing behavior ranges from repeated offensive or
belittling jokes to outright physical assault. In the hospitality industry,
workers can be subject to extreme forms of harassment by coworkers and
customers.”( Hayes, D. and Ninemeier, J. (2008). In the end, Mr. Sheldrick got what it was coming to him. His secretary that he fired, because she threatened his mistress. So, the secretary called his wife to meet up with her and inform her of her husband's infidelities. Fraternizing with another employee was very common in this company, and they didn't seem too care about the day to day happenings of the business.

Week 8 EOC: 9 to 5
While watching the movie 9 to 5, it's so astonishing that in those days women were seen as second class. When one woman is trying to make a living going working at an office, everything is taken into consideration. From what she wears to her cor-denials. "Many HR texts describe the operation of an organization's HR department. In the hospitality industry, the on-site manager is that unit's HR department in all except the largest of operations. Thus, it is extremely important that hospitality managers be well versed in HR management, including employee recruitment and selection, training, compensation, performance appraisal, and discipline, safety, and other key areas in which they will be personally called upon to make critical decisions. Therefore, this text asks the reader to assume the role of that decision maker."(Human Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry, 1st Edition. PREFACE). There was a lot of things wrong in the movie at first their was stealing, bribery, and forgery. The boss was as guilty as the women workers at times. One of the many things the boss did wrong was not promoting from within. Many of the employees that work their, deserve to get a promotion. They have seniority and loyalty to the company. Another thing was he was talking bad about the other employees, not defining job responsibilities, and saying digesting juster words to them like "you girls." “From a legal perspective, if harassment is established under the quid pro quo version, the employer automatically is liable and will be held accountable for whether or not steps were taken to correct the situation…an employer's liability in a hostile work environment case must be established by showing not only that the harassment occurred, but also that the employer did not take appropriate action to stop it” (Hayes, David K. Human Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry, 1st Edition. Pg. 351. Wiley, 02/2008. VitalSource Bookshelf Online). Mr. Hart fires a girl for discussing salary. I feel like that should be a freedom of speech, any employee at any given time has the right to say anything about her own struggles that she is going through. As this employee was packing up to leave, a cop is standing behind her watching her so she doesn't take anything. “A commonly used four-step progressive disciplinary includes documented oral warning, written warning, suspension, and dismissal” (Hayes, David K. Human Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry, 1st Edition. Pg. 311. Wiley, 02/2008. VitalSource Bookshelf Online).

WEEK 6 EOC: JOB POST
“The
American public has probably always been concerned about ethics. However,
today, after recurring news events about numerous business organizations and
political corruption and abuses at all governmental levels that most persons
believe to have serious ethical consequences, these concerns have never been
more significant.” Before coming to The Art Institute I don't think I would have the
skills that I have attained at this school.
Being here for the past year and a half, I have gained so much education
about the business of fashion. How this
business can be cruel, but at the same time can be the most rewarding position. The company Farfetch is one I have been
following for a long time. They have the
biggest high end and luxury retail stores in the world. They are an international brand that The
independent boutiques within our community have been carefully selected for
their forward-thinking attitude, unique approach to merchandising and diversity
of brands.
They are located everywhere from Paris, New York and Milan to
Bucharest, Riyadh and Seattle, but united in one e-commerce website. When you
order through Farfetch, your order is delivered directly from the boutique to
your door. "Human
resources managers should recognize that their behavior often speaks more
loudly than the philosophy expressed in their organization's mission statement.
Consider managers who specify food portions that violate truth-in-menu laws,
their peers who raise hotel room rates in times of emergencies in states where
it is legal (but perhaps not ethical) to do so, and managers in all segments of
the hospitality industry who exaggerate benefits in marketing and advertising
messages."

Week 4: Physical Attractiveness
In every work environment, there is always a tension of physical attractiveness. The key is if employees and employers are going to stay professional and act accordingly. Anyone inside the workplace is not supposed to mix in any personal life. Then situations start happening such as, biased points of views, and favoritism. "Just as employers face economic constraints, employees may be attracted to or deterred from applying for a position because of the money they can earn. It is clearly in the best interests of both the employer and employee for each to understand the realistic range of compensation available for vacant positions before these positions are advertised and applied for." The workplace is somewhere an employee needs and should feel safe. It is prohibited to force oneself onto any sort of physical attractiveness. If it did happen, the company can go through a law suit that may lead to more trouble at hand. "Those managers directly responsible for recruiting a qualified pool of candidates must be keenly aware of the varied constraints they face prior to developing their recruiting plans."
Week 3: Workplace Fairness
"Employment law in the United States arose, in most cases, as a result of the demands of workers for better working conditions and the right to organize. Whenever these worker demands were deemed reasonable by a majority of society or the courts, legislation was enacted and became part of the accepted employment practices of the country." Living and working in the United States we have many rights as citizens and paid workers. If for any injustices going on in the work place, that employee is authorized to report it. If for any reason, the employee does not report it. The company can have a really big lawsuit if and when it is out. The National Employers Lawyers Association acts on behalf of the employee for any workplace fairness. "In other cases, the citizens of individual states or cities may vary greatly in their own views of what constitutes fairness in employment. Not surprisingly then, employment laws that vary greatly are likely to be enacted in those states and cities. As a result, you as a hospitality manager must be keenly aware of the individual employment laws that directly affect you, your operation, and your employees."
Week 2: Case Study-Human Resources Management in Action
Being a single mother is one of the hardest jobs in the world. I know first hand, because my mother is a single mother and I know what she went through to get my siblings and I to this point. Donna, a hotel attendant works nine years with perfect attendance the whole time and she has one day to miss with her daughters graduation and they can't give her that. I feel like hotels have many people on the extra board and one of those people can fill her spot. I don't think their is a reason of conflict, because Donna wants to take one day off. I feel like the hotel should understand that, and accommodate her on. I feel believe in seniority, and if a person has an obligation to her daughter. It is essential her workplace should support. It is hard to find good hardworking employees that never call out and do their work as they should.
